Cabinetry, materials and detailing

Bespoke kitchen furniture allows cabinet widths, drawer layouts and finishes to suit the room rather than a standard set of unit sizes. It can also accommodate alcoves, chimney breasts and other features that affect the layout.

Classic English-style furniture combines careful attention to detail with traditional furniture-making methods. Different timbers and painted finishes can be combined for a rich, warm effect, while mantles, mouldings and smaller details are designed to complement one another.

Made around the room

Islands can combine preparation space, drawers and seating. Dressers provide display storage, while larders keep food and small appliances together. Their size and position depend on the space available and how the kitchen is used.

Understand the specification

What can actually be made to measure?

“Bespoke” can describe different levels of choice. One scheme may adjust cabinet widths and depths around an alcove; another may use standard cabinet carcasses with doors made in a chosen size or finish. Internal fittings, drawer construction, hinges and handles may be selected separately. Ask which parts are standard, which dimensions can change and which details are being made specifically for the room.

For an awkward corner or a narrow passage, check the usable internal space and the opening arc on a dimensioned drawing. A tailored exterior still needs room for a drawer to extend and a person to move past it. The small kitchen layout guide helps test those routes, and the storage guide helps match internal fittings to what you own.

Ask for evidence you can compare

Before approving a design, request a plan and elevations with key dimensions, a door and finish sample, and a written specification for cabinets, interiors, worktops and appliances. Ask which finishes appear on visible end panels and what care the chosen surfaces need. The worktop guide sets out material-specific questions; the appliance planning guide covers fitting details. If comparing proposals, use the quote checklist to identify differences in materials, installation and exclusions.
